The CAT C15 engine is a 15.2 litre inline six that has been working in trucks, generator sets, rock crushers, loaders and marine auxiliaries for over twenty years. Plenty of them are still running, which tells you how well the design holds up. But no C15 lasts forever. Liners sink, bearings lose clearance, injectors get tired and the oil level starts dropping.
This guide covers what most owners ask before a rebuild: when to overhaul, what a CAT C15 overhaul kit should contain, which CAT C15 engine parts are worth replacing while the engine is open, and how to service it afterwards so the money you spent actually lasts. If you are sourcing parts for a fleet or a plant, STC Engineering’s full range of CAT engine parts is a good place to check stock.

How Long Does a CAT C15 Last Before an Overhaul?
Most C15 engines run between 700,000 and 1,000,000 miles before they need a major overhaul. Older pre-DPF engines often go further. ACERT engines with a particulate filter usually finish nearer the lower figure.
Hours tell a different story depending on the job. A crusher engine pulling hard all day ages much faster than a genset that mostly sits on standby. Clean oil, clean air and healthy coolant matter more than anything else you can control.
Signs Your CAT C15 Needs an Overhaul
Don’t wait for a breakdown. These are the warning signs to act on:
- Low oil pressure once the engine is warm
- Oil use going up, or blue smoke on load
- Heavy blow-by from the breather
- Weak pull even though fuel and injectors check out
- Coolant showing up in the oil, or oil in the coolant
- Metal particles in your oil analysis report
Take an oil sample and do a compression check first. Both are cheap, and they tell you whether you need a full engine overhaul or a smaller repair.
In-Frame vs Out-of-Frame Rebuild
An in-frame overhaul leaves the engine in the machine and the crankshaft where it is. You replace liners, pistons, rings and bearings. Shops commonly quote about 45 labor hours for a C15 in-frame job, and roughly 8 more if the block counterbores need cutting to fix liner height.
An out-of-frame rebuild takes the engine out. That lets you measure the crankshaft, camshaft and block properly and replace what has worn. Go this route if you see deep wear, oil contamination across the whole system, or a crank that fails inspection.
Not sure which one you need? Measure before you decide. Journal wear and block condition should make the call, not the odometer.
What Comes in a CAT C15 Overhaul Kit
Contents differ between suppliers and between serial numbers, but a typical CAT C15 in-frame overhaul kit includes the following:
| Component | Qty | Example part number |
|---|---|---|
| Cylinder kit (liner, piston, rings, pin, retainers, o-rings) | 6 | Varies by serial number |
| Connecting rod bearings | 6 | 9Y7735G |
| Main bearings | 7 | 3178766 |
| Thrust plates | 2 | 2531752 |
| Major overhaul gasket set | 1 | Varies by kit |
Out-of-frame kits usually add front and rear seals, cam bearings and sometimes a camshaft or crankshaft. Kits are serial number specific. Piston crowns, single or compound turbo setups and emissions packages all change what goes in the box, so confirm fit before you pay.
CAT C15 Engine Parts to Replace While the Engine Is Open
Labor is the biggest cost in any rebuild. Once everything is apart, replace whatever would force you to strip the engine again.
Cylinder liners and pistons. These are the heart of the job. Buy the CAT C15 cylinder kit as a matched set so the liner, piston and rings are designed to work together.
Bearings and thrust plates. Mic the crank journals first, then choose standard or undersize bearings.
Gasket kits. Use a full CAT C15 gasket kit that covers the head, oil pan, rocker cover and seals. A cheap gasket set is one of the most common reasons for early leaks.
Oil pump and water pump. On a high-mileage engine, replace both. A worn oil pump can ruin fresh bearings in a few hundred hours.
Fuel injectors. Worn injectors cause smoke, misfires and hard starts. If the set is past 300,000 miles, replace it, or at least replace the o-rings.
Turbocharger. Check shaft play. A tired turbo can push oil and debris into a brand-new engine.
Cylinder head. If you reuse it, pressure test it and magnaflux it. Cracked heads are a known C15 problem.
Sensors and connectors. Oil pressure, coolant temperature and turbo speed sensors are small parts that cause big headaches after a rebuild.
The Liner Protrusion Problem
The C15 uses wet liners that sit on the block deck. Over a long life they wear into the deck unevenly and sink. This is called liner protrusion, and it is one of the main causes of blown head gaskets on this engine.
Measure liner protrusion at every overhaul. If it is out of spec, correct the counterbores before the new liners go in. Some rebuilders also fit o-ringed heads and raised lip liners on high-horsepower engines to hold the head gasket better. Skip this step and a fresh rebuild can fail within the first few hundred hours.
Tools You Will Need for a C15 Overhaul
- Torque wrench that reaches 600 ft-lbs
- Liner puller and installer
- Piston ring compressor
- Dial bore gauge and micrometer set
- Camshaft timing tool, especially on ACERT models
After the Rebuild: Break-In and First Service
The first hours decide how long the rebuild lasts. Keep idling to a minimum, avoid heavy load for the first stretch, and watch oil pressure and coolant temperature closely. Many shops change the oil and filter early and send an oil sample to confirm the bearings and rings are settling in. Check for leaks after the first heat cycles.
CAT C15 Maintenance Schedule
Good maintenance costs far less than an overhaul. These are typical intervals from published service data:
| Service item | Standard duty | Severe duty |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | 500 hours or 15,000 miles | 250 to 300 hours |
| Oil analysis | Every drain | Every drain |
| Valve lash | Intake 0.015 in, exhaust 0.030 in | Same setting, check more often |
| Air filter, fuel filters, coolant | As per your manual | Shorter intervals |
Check every number against your own operation and maintenance manual and engine serial number. Dusty quarries, mines and marine work all call for tighter intervals.
Genuine vs Aftermarket CAT C15 Parts
Both have a place. Genuine parts give you a known fit and full traceability. Good aftermarket brands such as Mahle, Garrett, BorgWarner, BERCO and FP Diesel can cost less and work well in most jobs.
The real danger is unbranded parts with no traceability. Buy named brands from a supplier who can tell you exactly where each part came from. STC Engineering supplies genuine CAT parts and quality aftermarket options, so you can balance budget against duty. For a look at current pricing, read our CAT spare parts price list for India.
How to Find the Right CAT C15 Part Number
- Read the serial number and arrangement number off the engine plate.
- Look up the parts in your Cat parts manual or the Caterpillar SIS.
- Confirm the turbo setup, emissions package and piston type.
- Send those details to your supplier and ask them to confirm fit in writing.
If you’d rather skip the lookup, send your model, serial number and a short description to the team and they will identify the part for you.
C15 Parts for Mining, Marine and Power Generation
Not every C15 lives in a truck. In quarries, the engine drives crushers and loaders, and dust load is severe. STC supports these jobs with a full range of CAT mining parts. Vessel owners running auxiliaries can look at our CAT marine engine parts listing, and generator operators will find the Caterpillar engines parts page useful for matching series and models, from the 3300 and 3400 to the C series.
Working outside India? STC also supports buyers with CAT parts in Singapore and CAT parts in USA.
